About Tuffhead
TUFFHEAD Broadheads were the brainchild of Joe Furlong based on Dr. Ed Ashby’s studies outlining the perfect Broadhead design.
Joe Furlong, the founder of Vintage Archery LLC., has been hunting with traditional equipment for over 30 years. Joe formed Vintage Archery™ in early 1990 as a manufacturer of custom traditional bows. The company operated as a custom bow maker for several years producing longbows, recurves, flatbows, and self bows until it developed the Black Rhino™ line of youth longbows.
After the results of Dr. Ed Ashby’s experimentation with different broadheads on African game animals came to their attention, Vintage Archery™ started to consider different broadhead designs. Eventually, a design blending many ideas, including Dr. Ashby’s, evolved into a finished product. Moving from the design phase to manufacturing was not simple or easy. Consideration was given to many manufacturing processes such as casting, machining steel, and laminating using die-formed laminations. It was concluded that in order to incorporate the desired features into one broadhead the use of dies to produce laminations would be the most advantageous. It is our belief that the TUFFHEAD is “the first” and only laminated stainless steel laminated broadhead on the market.
Joe Furlong has killed his share of large game with many different broadheads. While they all do their job under normal conditions; few have the features of the TUFFHEAD to perform under duress when metal hits an unintended target such as bone.
During his hunting career, Joe Furlong has been actively involved with many archery organizations. He is a senior member of the Pope and Young Club, an associate member of the Professional Bowhunters Society (PBS), a life member of the United Bow Hunters of Illinois (UBI), and a life member of Compton Traditional Bowhunters. Joe considers support of our archery organizations important in order to protect and propagate our sport.
Now, in 2019 Joe has sold the TUFFHEAD design and knowledge to Jason (Wojo) Wojciechowicz owner of Primal Outdoors, LLC. With the support of Joe Furlong, Dr. Ed Ashby, and many other TUFFHEAD supporters, Jason plans to continue manufacturing the TUFFHEAD broadheads in Western Pennsylvania and to continue to advocate for heavier arrow configurations and ethical hunting practices.
Jason has been chasing various game, big and small, over the years and has had some success along the way. All with a TUFFHEAD mounted to the end of his arrow. Jason is a member of Compton Traditional Bowhunters, Professional Bowhunters Society, United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania, Back Country Hunters and Anglers, along with various local clubs. Primal Outdoors, LLC and TUFFHEAD are proud sponsors of TradGang and Traditional Archery Society. All with the intention of promoting the good of our sport.
Being involved in the traditional bowhunting industry and producing a product he stands by is a dream of his. Jason plans to carry on the TUFFHEAD product in the same manner in which it was founded.
